Recruitment in 2018: A Whole New Ballgame

Yes, 2017 was a challenging year for the recruitment industry. Many read the forecast for 2017 and pushed on with tried and tested strategies when they should have tried a different approach. Now that the fiscal year is over, many probably regret not diversifying their strategy.

According to a forecast by Statista, by 2018 unemployment could drop to 4.4%. However, as of October 2017, The Balance reports an unemployment rate of 4.1%, which is far lower than expected. The report also states that the natural rate of unemployment should be within the range of 4.5 to 5%.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. The report shows that more people are happy with their jobs or at least are motivated to stay employed at their current workplace. However, if you are looking for top talent, 2018 will be even more challenging. Undercover Recruiter shares a few tips that might make next year less challenging for those growing or upgrading their teams.

Reach Out to Passive But Strong Candidates
We've talked about recruiting passive candidates in the past; next year, this strategy will be so much more important. Passive candidates are currently employed and are not actively seeking new employment opportunities. These are usually tenured individuals who are content with where they are, but may be swayed by enticing offers.

Passive candidates are usually very good at what they do and will commonly receive counteroffers. Be ready to up your offer even after it is accepted. Employers will have to expect counteroffers and be ready to match the amount or offer more.

Improve Candidate Care
Human resources has gotten so used to people jumping at the chance to interview that many companies have failed to consider the importance of candidate care. Instead of just looking at candidates as resources to fill specific roles, employers must think about how the candidate views them based on their interaction and reputation on social media.

Long interview processes won't work with passive candidates. Now is the time to make the recruitment process easier for them. We are in the age of digital recruiting. With the rise of Millennials in the workforce, companies need to be ready to answer more questions and be more accommodating in general.

Don't leave candidates waiting, even those who you deem unsuccessful. In a few years, these people may cultivate skills which will make them valuable to your organization. If not, it will still help how people view your company.

In this new age of recruiting, the new breed of candidates have more options laid out before them. We need to evolve to come up with a wider pool of top talent. The truth is that those who fail to adapt will be unable to attract the candidates they need.

PSU Extension Releases Best Milking Practices Online Course

Mastitis is a serious condition that not only affects a herd's output, but their quality of life, as well. Dairy Herd Management just announced that Penn State University Extension currently offers an online course called "Best Milking Practices."

This is a self-paced course for producers, employees, and managers in the dairy industry. It covers concepts and techniques that will teach people how to measure and reduce mastitis levels. The course covers mastitis basics, cow handling, cleanliness, milking, pre and post milking prep, infection management, and other relevant topics.

Mastitis is an expensive disease, making prevention better than cure. Amber Yutzy, who is a dairy herd health educator, says that the course "will help to increase productivity and profitability on dairies that participate." If you think that will help you improve your operations, sign up for the course here.

USPOULTRY Approves 7 New Research Grants

Research is an integral part of any industry, especially animal nutrition. New developments can help the industry evolve to better serve consumers. The Poultry Site just released an article that talks about how USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation approved seven new research grants at five institutions. The total amount allocated is $355,000.

Selection is done based on the approval of the board of directors of both organizations. These are based on recommendations given by the Foundation Research Advisory Committee. This organization evaluates proposals to determine if they are valuable to the poultry industry.

More than $30 million have been reinvested by USPOULTRY and its Foundation. The primary source of funds come from the International Poultry Expo and part of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE). You can view the full article with the list of approved grants here.
