THE MID-YEAR CAREER SELF-EVALUATION

We are approaching the midpoint of the year. The job market is sizzling hot as unemployment has dropped to historically low levels and salaries are climbing. This is a great time to evaluate your present career position.

That might sound like an odd thing to do, as I am certain you have invested so much effort to get where you are now. Even so, to make sure you are where you are supposed to be, it is important to evaluate your standing regularly.

The mid-year is historically one of the best times to look for opportunities if you are not in love with where you are at present. Don't get me wrong. I hope you are thrilled with your job. If you are, then I will presume that you are engaged with your employer and paid at the top of your field. Sadly, I know not everyone is.

If you are not sure about where you stand, ask yourself these questions for a quick evaluation. Give yourself 10 points for every YES, 5 points for SOMETIMES/MAYBE and 0 points for every NO. So let's begin! You will find the survey here!

Add up your points. I hope you scored 100! Now here is the last question. Are you proud of the score you just gave yourself? If yes, congratulations! If not, maybe it is time to update your resume, call a recruiter and interview for better opportunities while the market is high.

MPP-Dairy Check Processing Began on June 4

We talked about MPP-Dairy a few months ago. According to Progressive Dairyman, the deadline was on June 1, 2018. The Farm Service Agency (FSA) made certain that interested farmers were able to enroll by the June 1 deadline. They were given the option to download and fill out the application form or to visit the FSA county office to apply.

Dairy producers who decided to go the MPP route are getting their checks soon. Producers enrolled in the 2018 Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPP-Dairy) and have elected $7, $7.50, or $8 per hundredweight margin coverage are guaranteed indemnity payments for milk production from February to April. The checks should be available early to mid-June and will cover February and March and possibly even April pay periods.

According to the estimates, dairy producers signed up for the $7, $7.50, and $8 per cwt margin levels will get a net cash return that is higher than the premium payment (14.2 cents/cwt) at the Tier I $8 margin level.

Cynthia Walters, who is the program director with the USDA FSA in Pennsylvania, said that FSA offices are in the late stages of installing payment software to handle indemnity checks. The indemnity payments are expected to go to eligible producers quickly. You can read the full article by Dave Natzke here.

Are You Ready For the USPOULTRY 2019 Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award Competition?

USPOULTRY has begun accepting nominations for the 2019 Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award. This award will go to family farmers in poultry and egg production who are good examples of environmental stewardship.

Nominees can be any family-owned egg producer or poultry grower that supplies product to a USPOULTRY member or even a USPOULTRY member who is an independent producer. Nominations must be made by an affiliated state poultry association or a USPOULTRY member. This is done by filling out an application that is provided by USPOULTRY. Please keep in mind that every integrator or egg processor can nominate one producer or grower for every processing facility in each state that supports their operations.

Semi-finalists will receive coverage of travel expenses and hotel accommodations for two nights so they may attend the awards ceremony during the 2019 IPPE, to be held in Atlanta, GA. They will also get a Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award sign, which they can display near their farm entrance.

Each regional winner will get a $1,000 cash award. The farm of every regional winner will be featured on the USPOULTRY website. The association will also publicize their farm's award in local, regional, and even national media. For more details, click here.

Liver Biopsies For Mineral Deficiency Testing

Mineral deficiencies in cattle can be hard to spot, especially if you are looking for them in the wrong places. Beef Magazine recently published an article by Alan Newport that will be insightful for producers in this industry.

Dr. Jeffery Hall, head of the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, received a package with 10 pairs of blood serum and liver biopsies. He called the vet to tell him that there was no need to run both the blood and liver samples. The vet said he needed them to prove the importance of liver sampling to a client.

All 10 liver biopsies showed that there was severe copper deficiency, yet only one blood serum sample tested positive for this deficit. Dr. Hall says that one can find copper deficiency in 60% to 70% of all beef cattle tested. He also shared that many vets have trouble convincing their clients to have liver biopsies taken from their cattle for an accurate reading.

Perhaps producers feel that it is very invasive and costly, as well. Dr. Hall also stated that if it is done properly, the procedure will have little to no effect on the cattle. You can read the full article here.
